October 2026

This page is a reading — “some analysts see it this way.” It is not a verdict on who is right. Based on material as of October 2026; later events are not reflected.

Goals

  • Long-standing balanced diplomacy, "bamboo that bends with the wind".
  • One study holds that the phrase is a "meta-narrative" made in the détente years of 1968-80 (ANU Press, A Genealogy of Bamboo Diplomacy).

Cards in hand

  • Treaty ally of the US, with deep ties to China
  • The Mekong

Weak points

  • Pressure from both sides at once.
  • It sent Uyghurs back to China on 27 Feb 2025. The US then imposed visa sanctions on Thai officials (14 Mar 2025).

Moves, read through game theory

A border dispute: "peace that holds only while the enforcer is watching"

Fighting with Cambodia in July 2025, then a ceasefire on 28 July (hosted by Malaysia; the US pressed with trade preferences). The US and Malaysian leaders witnessed the Kuala Lumpur joint declaration on 26 Oct 2025. After a landmine blast on 10 Nov 2025, Thailand suspended implementation. Fighting resumed in December, and a new ceasefire followed on 27 Dec 2025. Cambodia denies laying new mines. Both sides' claims are given.
